Vernon Hills — Rural and suburban areas served by the Countryside Fire Protection District have received better fire insurance ratings, which may mean lower premiums for many businesses and some rural residents.
Countryside Fire Protection District serves a 24-square-mile area including the suburbs of Vernon Hills, Indian Creek and Long Grove and unincorporated Ivanhoe, Countryside Lake and West Shore Park, said Deputy Chief Jim Spiegel.
ISO Commercial Risk Services Inc. of Chicago, which rates the fire departments of municipalities nationwide, has given the district three separate improved ratings for each of the areas served, Spiegel said.
Fire departments are rated on the number of personnel on their staff and the amount of equipment they use to handle fires, he said.
Spiegel said he could not predict the impact on homeowners' premiums because that would depend on individual insurance companies. However, he said he expected businesses, which pay higher premiums than homeowners, to benefit more from the new ratings.
Suburban areas including Vernon Hills received an ISO fire insurance rating of 3, down from 4, while unincorporated areas without fire hydrants near Hawthorn Woods and Long Grove received a rating of 4, down from 5. Other unincorporated areas, including Ivanhoe and Countryside Lake, were rated a 3, down from 4.
The ratings are based on a 10-point scale, with 1 being the best fire service.
