Care has been taken to build on the hotel’s Georgian characteristics by introducing a sensitive blend of the traditional and the contemporary under the auspices of the New York‑based firm Champalimaud Design. There are subtle Asian touches too – a nod to YTL Hotels, the Malaysian owners. The breadth of history and culture ranges from a display of some of the Roman coins found during excavations on the site (known as the Beau Street Hoard) to contemporary artworks by students at Bath Spa University.Roman columns and glass roof dominate the compact and exquisite Spa Village, which comprises three thermal pools, sauna, steam room and 11 treatment rooms offering a range of massages and Asian‑influenced therapies. The Romanesque feel is enhanced by a replica Roman mosaic (which lies above the preserved remains of the 4th century original), while guests are encouraged to take the traditional and invigorating “Bath House Circuit” before their treatment, spending around an hour soaking in the three pools of varying temperatures, rubbing the body with crushed lavender ice and having a sauna. There’s a well-equipped fitness room and the hotel’s staff, many of whom are local, are charming and helpful. The place has an air of supremely efficient calm.
