Canonical has recently unveiled the final version of the OS Ubuntu 15.10 “Wily Werewolf”. It brings many new features, including the presence of the Linux 4.2 kernel, which offers encryption support on f2fs partitions.
The Unity desktop environment grows in strength, like desktop applications shipped with the OS. Ubuntu 15.10 is available on conventional PC but also on a selection of smartphones (and tablets soon?), As well as offerings like the Raspberry Pi 2.
But Ubuntu is also a server OS, used on a growing number of large machinery manufacturers. IBM has thus placed at the heart of its OpenPower initiative.
OpenStack in automatic mode
Ubuntu 15.10 comes with OpenStack Autopilot, a solution simplifying deployment and management of OpenStack cloud infrastructure. A key element for business, the cost of a cloud being less tied to license fees as centralized management tools available. Note that this solution is free only for small-scale infrastructure (up to 10 servers).
The controller SDN (Software Defined Networking) OpenDaylight is also available as standard. Again, it is essential for next-generation virtualized infrastructures, which – after Compute and Storage – are now tackling the network.
Finally, the LXD containers are supported by Ubuntu 15.10, with the ability to run non-Linux Ubuntu hosts eg machines in CentOS container.
